Saturday night, somebody's basement. Six beige boxes, one 10BASE-T hub, a crate of Volt Cola and far too many Nachoz. Build your own PC at the shop, carry it down and plug it in, then grab a seat and start a deathmatch with mates in DOOM, Quake, Hexen, Heretic, Descent or Duke Nukem 3D. It is shooters first; at midnight somebody puts StarCraft on.
Between rounds there is plenty to do: order a pepperoni on the wall phone, ring Dazza on the Nokka 51, surf the web in Internet Explorer, hunt songs on Snapster, play Minesweeper, Solitaire or Downhill, rip the case off a mate's tower, or flick the lights off and let the monitors do the work. Trip the yellow extension lead and you will be the one fixing it.
